Elements of Music
(four classes/four hours)

~ An introduction to Note and Rest Value, Meter, Rhythm, Dynamics, Pitch, and Musical instruments ~

  • Note and Rest Value: Students will learn a variety of different types of notes and the value of each note (quarter note, half note, dotted half note, whole note, eighth note, sixteenth note, dotted quarter note, dotted eighth notes, dotted sixteenth note). Students will learn five different types of rests and the quality of each rest (quarter rest, half rest, eighth rest, sixteenth rest, and whole rest).

Lesson Plan #1 - Grade 3 Music Education

  • Rhythm: Students will learn how to clap out or sing a basic rhythmic progression consisting of quarter notes, half notes, dotted half notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and whole notes.

There are various rhythmic activities that can be used in the classroom to demonstrate rhythm:

  1. Clap out a short, simple rhythm and have the students imitate the rhythm.
  2. Write a short rhythmic progression on the board and have the students clap the given rhythm.
  3. Divide the class into two groups and give each group of students a different rhythm to clap out. Have both groups, simultaneously, clap the rhythm.
  4. Have the students sit in a circle and distribute a tambourine around the circle. Ask each student to create a rhythm for the entire class to play on their tambourine.

  • Dynamics: Students will be able to distinguish between very loud, moderately loud, loud, soft, moderately soft, and very soft sounds using dynamic terminology – fortissimo, forte, mezzo forte, piano, mezzo piano, and pianissimo. Students will do activities to reinforce the understanding of the dynamic symbols - ff, mf, f, p, mp, and pp. In addition, students will understand the connection between dynamics and emotions in a piece of music.

There are various activities that can be used in the classroom to demonstrate dynamics:

  1. Have the students shout, speak loudly, speak quiety, or whisper to demonstrate dynamics.
  2. Play a short melody on the piano using a wide range of dynamics.
  3. Have the students create their own song using a wide range of dynamics.
  4. Play a piece of music and have the students explain how the dynamics shaped the piece of music. Did the dynamics tell a story? Did the dynamics create triumph or sadness?

Possible activities to demonstrate pitch in the classroom:

  1. Play a C major scale on the piano and have the students enunciate the different pitches in ‘ta’ or ‘da’.
  2. Play a high note or a low note on the piano and have the students either reach their hands up to the ceiling to represent a high pitch or bend low to the ground to demonstrate a lower pitch.

  • Musical Instruments: Students will learn a variety of musical instruments, including an instrument from each instrument family. Students will learn the sound of each instrument and will be able to distinguish between instruments. In addition, students will learn the appearance of a few instruments.

Possible classroom activities:

  1. Have the students make their own musical instrument. Example: Rain sticks, drums, or guitars.
  2. Play an orchestral CD and point out the different sounds of the instruments.
  3. Show large diagrams of different musical instruments.
